  • The roots of O&K Mining GmbH (today Terex GmbH) reach back to 1876 when the Company's founders Benno Orenstein and Arthur Koppel hit upon the idea of moving rock and soil more quickly and efficiently by using narrow-gauge railways. Even in those days evaluations of economic efficiency provided the basis for multiplying labor productivity and lowering the operators' time and energy input. This was followed by the construction of sturdy narrow-gauge locomotives, the foundation of several factories and a world encompassing sales organization. After the turn of the century the product range was continuously extended and the first bucket dredgers were produced, first of all in wood and then starting from 1904 "all iron." They were driven by steam or spirit engines. In 1908, O&K developed the first backhoe excavator "for work in very heavy soils and rock." These units were initially rail mounted but by 1922 the first steam-driven backhoes on crawler tracks were leaving the O&K assembly line. From 1926, diesel replaced steam engines. 1934 saw the first bucket wheel excavator. After 1949, the focus of production was on construction machines and open-cast mining equipment, and especially the building of excavators. Over 55,000 hydraulic excavators have so far been built and more than 700 of these weigh more than 100 t. O&K has always pioneered progress and in 1961 was the first company in Europe to produce all-hydraulic excavators, a product to which the Company then applied all its efforts in achieving a worldwide break-through. Electronic control and monitoring systems are another area in which O&K has played a leading role. As well as in the production of bigger and bigger machines, extending nowadays to the world's largest hydraulic excavator, the 1000 t heavy RH 400. Since April 1, 1998, O&K Mining GmbH has been a part of the Terex Group. TEREX is a world leader with a broad-based range of articulated and rigid trucks, coal trucks, scrapers, and hydraulic excavators. Within the Group, Terex Mining specializes on digging and haulage machines that operate in quarries and open-cast mines. Together, O&K excavators and Unit Rig dump trucks are the ideal team - powerful and cost-efficient mining equipment from a single source.
